Each year at Christmas the Kirk Session of Kemnay Church designates a local charity to receive our Christmas Offerings. This year the Charity is the Scottish Huntington’s Association. The SHA was formed in 1989 by families living with the disease. In 1992 the first part-time professional advisor was employed, funded by Mental Illness Specific Grant, to identify need in Lothian. In the following 16 years and following a considerable amount of hard work from families and professional staff, the Association is now able to provide expert care to families living primarily in their own homes. Just as importantly, support is offered by families for families using a network of family support groups.
Sarah Winkless, Olympic Bronze Medallist Rowing champion is an HD gene carrier. ’In my early teen’s’ she said, ‘there was a change in Mum. Her behaviour became strange and erratic; she was prone to mood swings and seemed to lose the natural grace of her movements. This was my introduction to Huntington’s disease.’ You can read more by going to www.hdscotland.org
There will be opportunities to make an offering at our Christmas Eve and Christmas day services or by sending a donation to the General Treasurer Mr Ian Rigby at Kemnay Church Office, Church Lane, Kemnay, Inverurie, AB51 5QP
